Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are used to smelt steel using electricity as an energy source. There are various types of steelmaking furnaces, including induction furnaces, electroslag furnaces, electron beam furnaces, and self-consuming electric arc furnaces. Typically, alkaline electric arc furnaces are used to produce electric furnace steel. This steel is primarily used to manufacture high-quality carbon structural steels, tool steels, and alloy steels, which possess uniform properties and excellent quality. EAF steel has better strength and plasticity than open-hearth steel at the same carbon content. The chemical composition and alloy element content of EAF steel are adjusted by adding ferroalloys. The primary raw material for EAF steel is scrap steel, and sponge iron is also used to replace some scrap steel. Electric furnace steelmaking with scrap as a raw material requires less capital investment than converter processes. Direct reduction also provides metallized pellets that can replace most scrap steel for electric furnace steelmaking, which has greatly expanded the use of EAFs.
